In our 'Dance to Learn!'® Programs we strive to develop a creative approach to Classroom Management.
"Classroom Management is the hardest part of the job."
We recently developed the "D-A-N-C-E-R Stick" to use in our Elementary Program classes. The "D-A-N-C-E-R Stick" is a visual reminder to students on how a dancer behaves and the characteristics that dancers should exude in each and every class.
What does D-A-N-C-E-R stand for?
Dancers are incredibly disciplined individuals. Not only are dancers disciplined at controlling their bodies and how their bodies move, but they also are disciplined in their behavior. They are always attentive, have a good attitude, and respect classroom expectations as presented by the teacher.
Dancers always arrive to class with a positive attitude and willingness to learn and participate in class.
Dancers are nice to their peers and instructors. Dance should be used to bridge cultural and social differences.
Dancers are committed to their craft and committed to learning and improving. Dancers do not give up no matter how difficult a movement may be.
Dancers are excited to learn and improve in each and every class. Dancers welcome feedback from their teacher and peers.
Dancers show respect to their instructors by valuing classroom rules and expectations, respecting their dance space and respecting their fellow students.
Making your D-A-N-C-E-R Stick
Get ready to get crafty with us as we take you through a step-by-step guide on making your D-A-N-C-E-R Stick. We will write a future post on how to successfully use your D-A-N-C-E-R Stick in class for the best results.
STEP 1: Measure the duct tape so it is about a 1/2 inch longer than your ruler. Use your scissors to cut the duct tape.
STEP 2: Fold the ends of your duct tape over the ends of the ruler.
STEP 3: Fold the sides of your duct tape over the sides of the ruler.
STEP 4: Measure your duct tape as in STEP 1. Turn the ruler over and repeat Steps 2 & 3
STEP 5: Use your Foam Glue to glue the ends of your ductape to the ruler.
STEP 6: Set your ruler aside. Grab your Glitter Foam sheets, duct tape, a sharpie and a pair of scissors. Turn your Glitter Foam sheets over. Using your duct tape as a stencil, use your black sharpie to draw a circle.
STEP 7: Cut out your circle. Repeat steps 6&7 until you have 6 circles (or shapes).
STEP 8: Glue the glitter clothes pins to each circle using your Foam Glue. Be sure the end of clothes pin (the part that is pressed to open) is exposed on the side of the circle (see below).
Tip: To ensure the clothes pin is glued tightly, apply glue to both the pin and the circle. Set aside to dry (3 hours).
STEP 9: Set your markers on the rulers. Lie out 6 glitter shapes with enough room for your clothes pins to placed evenly along the stick. These will represent where each letter in
"D-A-N-C-E-R" is placed on the "D-A-N-C-E-R Stick."
STEP 10: Peel the backing off of the sticker. Apply a small dab of foam glue and press onto your ruler (as pictured below).
STEP 11: Lay out your glitter letters and shapes on your clothes pin circles.
STEP 12: Remove the backs of each sticker. Apply a dab of foam glue and press to each circle. (as pictured below).
